Our series inviting you to visit the Grands Châteaux live from France continues! Today Russell Kelley looks at the Château de Chantilly, the product of 500 years of construction and reconstruction, in the company of its heritage curator Dr. Mathieu Deldicque.
Anne de Montmorency (1493-1567), companion-in-arms of Francis I, inherited the Château de Chantilly, which dated back to the 14th century. He was the first of the “grands hommes” who created the Château de Chantilly, transforming the Grand Château (demolished during the Revolution) and the Petit Château (now the oldest part of the château) in the French Renaissance style, at the same time that he was building the Château d’Écouen 15 miles to the south. Louis II de Bourbon-Condé, Prince de Condé (1621-1686), known as “Le Grand Condé” because of his military exploits during the reign of Louis XIV, commissioned Le Nôtre to design the park. During the 18th century, later Princes de Condé added the Grandes Écuries (Great Stables) in the Rococo style, the Château d’Enghien and the Hameau (Hamlet). Finally, after inheriting Chantilly in 1830, Henri d’Orléans, Duc d’Aumale, the fifth son of Louis-Philippe, the last king of France, rebuilt the Grand Château in the Renaissance style between 1875 and 1885. The Duc d’Aumale’s superb collection of paintings, drawings, books and furniture is now on display in the Musée Condé, which has the most important collection of Old Masters in France after the Louvre.
Dr. Mathieu Deldicque, who has a PhD in the History of Art, has been Heritage Curator at the Musée Condé in Chantilly since 2015.
